Total sweetheart, gentleman, smiliest dog.

Dear Bentley

When we adopted you 12mths ago you were already an old man, deaf and arthritic, but not yet ready for the big sleep. I hope the year we have had together has been as happy for you as it has been for us. You came to us in a sad and scruffy condition. It would appear that you were too much work for someone, perhaps someone elderly who clearly loved you but could care for you no longer.

Your always smiling face, good manners and gentlest nature tell me you have been well looked after in the past. I do think you have enjoyed your extra time with us. We don't know your original name. Bentley seemed dignified and a good fit for a gentleman with wonky legs and hips. It doesn't really matter what we named you, being deaf you couldn't hear us call anyway.

Your smile and wagging tail greet us mornings and evenings, sometimes wagging you off your unsteady feet. Your fluffy tumbleweeds drift around the house. But lately it's been getting all too hard hasn't it. Those aching joints make it hard to get up. And while the concrete is cooler than your soft bed it's starting to rub sores on your boney bits when you lie in the same place too long.

It's time to go over the rainbow bridge and be a puppy agin. Playing in the fresh air and sunshine with all our other furbabies who have gone before you.

You may have only shared a short part of your life with us but you will be dearly missed. Go with all our love and cuddles.

RIP Bentley.

with love from Sue, Stephen, Douglas and Samantha
